Indong Market
Even though a scale of In-dong Market is reduced due to continuous opening of discount stores, a man's heart for conventional market is still alive. In-dong Market was the most influential market of its day.
In-dong Market was the first five-day market in Daejeon area and the cradle of the first Independence Hurray Movement occurred on March 16, 1919. This conventional market represents Daejeon together with Jungang Market as a market for selling straw bags and rice. However, the market is barely surviving with about 220 stores including about 40 stores of wholesale rice and miscellaneous cereals due to becoming hollow of subcenter.
Merchants of this market formed a prosperity committee for recovering commercial rights in August 1999, and trying best to activate managing direct dealing market including frugal store and quick sale on every Thursday and selling agricultural and livestock products at lower prices than the open market. In order to support self-relief efforts of merchants of the In-dong Market, Dong-gu Office assisted a festival of In-dong Market held in June 2000 and gave a chance to gather customers and publicize, and planned to activate Thursday's direct dealing and others, and doing best to raise conventional market.
At the grand festival which is opened annually, people participated directly in Pungmulnoli (playing with four farmer's musical instruments), Silver Pop Festival, Drinking beer quickly, Auction of Products, Twisting a straw rope, Throwing an arrow and others. At the festival, they sell flesh meat including meat of Korean cattle, pork, tale of cow, and cereals including traditional rice, glutinous rice, new polished barley, the pulses and others through frugal store and quick sale at about 30 to 40 per cent lower prices and planning to give medical treatment for disease of adult people to attendants free of charge.

Jungang Market
Daejeon Jungang Market is located conveniently near Daejeon Station. This conventional market represents Daejeon from old times.
This market has been led the economy of Daejeon from old times from 1953 to 1980s dominating main southern markets (Chungcheong-do, Jeolla-do and Gyeongsang-do). This market kept joys and sorrows of people in Daejeon areas as many as long period.
People not only general consumers but also wholesalers visit this Jungang conventional market frequently, and there are all kinds of products in this market, and this market is much convenient to buy products than other market as many shops are clustered close together. About 200 to 300 thousands of customers still visit this market daily. However, its commercial rights are being daunted slowly by change of distribution structure due to joining of surrounding discount stores.
According to these changes, Dong-gu Office in Daejeon is now executing the followings for activation of Jungang Conventional Market; Improvement of the existing facilities, Specialization of commercial rights, Leading to change merchants' point of view, Improvement of various kinds of environments, Redevelopment of the market, Modernization of facilities, Holding diverse events and others.
And also, they are trying to find many-sided plans for strengthening competitive power of Jungang Market. We think that Jungang Market will recover its reputation of conventional market as a center of the commercial rights of Daejeon.

Yuseong Traditional Market
What the large discount stores all over Yuseong-gu in Daejeon fear the most is the Yuseong market days when the customers desert the stores and all rush to the marketplace. (on the date that has 4 or 9 in the ending in every month)
On the 4th, 9th, 14th, 19th, 24th, and 29th of every month at Jangdae-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, the market is held. Originally, it was held on the 5tth and 10th, but it was changed to the 4th and 9th because strangely it would always rain on those days!
On market days, the place is full of people from all over the region such as Daedeok-gun, Okcheon, Gongju, Jochiwon, Geumsan, or Nonsan, not to mention many Daejeon citizens. Originally there were 40 stores located on the 600 pyeong land at Jangdae-dong but was insufficient to meet customers demands, so the market had to expand to vacant lots and alleys all over Jangdae-dong. The market is composed of a big triangular block, which is divided into five or six alleys, surrounded by a two-lane street.
The livestock market is held on the private land of over 3000 pyeong behind the Jangdae-dong office. Inside, there are shops that sell fish, vegetable, clothes, tableware and much more. Moreover, here you can see a lot of sights which are hard to see nowadays, such as a medicine sellers selling a 'cure-all' which can be seen only in movies and shops selling Gukbab (boiled rice served in soup) cooked in an iron cauldron.
The food sold at this market taste good and are inexpensive; among them, feast noodles costs 1,000 won and taste as good as the old days.
