It is a traditional festival that has 20 years of history and one which Daejeon city is proud of. In the whole Daejeon area, festivals for uniting are held.
Hanbat Cultural Festival is a provincial art event held all over Daejeon every October since 1983, when it began. At the same time, it is a festival where all the people can participate in seeing, listening, and enjoying to create community. |

During 10 days, 38 various events take place including the opening ceremony, the eve of the festival, culture & art festival, folk festival, academic festival, and science festival. Having settled down as a festival for all the citizens in Daejeon both in name and reality, it provides plentiful things to eat, see, and enjoy. This festival is superintended by the local society of the Korea Culture and Art Federation and by the Association of the Cultural Institute, and several subsidiary groups participate in it.
Main events are composed of 6 festivals and 15 events. With the eve of the 2001 Daejeon Fantasy as a beginning, several events follow, such as Seomak Hanullim Festival, Traditional Culture Festival, Light & Color Festival, Daejeon Family Festival, Central Street Event, Expo Bridge Event, Citizens' Singing Contest, and Miss Daejeon World Cup Contest.
People can see the traditional food in this festival, such as Traditional Developed Foods (150 items: 50 normal foods, 100 developed foods, and 5 foreign countries' foods), Traditional Table Setting and Flatware Exhibition (48 kinds, 160 items), and Classic Culture of Drinking (Drinking table preparation and party etiquette in the Joseon Dynasty). Along with them, about 20 local food restaurants are run (15 dishes boasted by each "gu" and 5 local foods) and Daejeon food publicity exhibition (35 places, manufacturers making excellent local foods) is also prepared. For participation of citizens, there is a cooking contest, cooking class, and tasting party of the displayed foods.
